I'm hoping to take part the Tail of Games.

So I'm trying to make up my mind which army to take

Wish List
  • All Plastic (for now, soo much easier to use, for speed)
  • Reasonably high points per model (for speed)
  • Simple but dramatic paint scheme (for speed, looking good)

Immediately Out
  • Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Grey Nights - I don't want to be stuck with one codex, want to do my own Chapter (so might use the rules!)
  • Chaos daemons - would quite like to paint Tzeentch, or Nurgle, but both sets rely on metal/fine cast.
  • Chaos Space Marines - I have a large Iron Warrior army already, and if do my own chapter, they could always turn traitor!
  • Dark Eldar - Just done a BB team.
  • Imperial Guard - Already started this army, and requires too many models
  • Sisters of Battle - all metal / fine cast.
  • Orcs - Too many models...
  • Tau - Too many models, I don't think I'd do them justice on the time.
  • - Too many models, because if I do Nyds I want to do a gribble horde not loads of monstrous creatures.
  • Eldar - All aspect warriors are have metal parts, or are fine cast. And I 've painted an Eldar army before.

Possible options Necrons or Space Marines.
Both have some really nice models, with out any conversions being required.
Both have good armour, resilient, forgiving to play

Pro Necron
Have a really good idea of how to paint the Necron foot soldiers
Everyone plays marines
Everyone knows how to play against marines.
Limited options for each squad, meaning fewer magnets or additional models required. No risk of building and painting the wrong options or wanting to change the list.
Necron Codex is very unlikely to be updated during project.
Marine Codex could well be updated during project

Pro Space Marine
Have a good idea of how to paint
Some Necron options are fine cast, metal, but I'm sure I can work round this.
Have no idea how to paint the Necron tanks to compliment the troops.
Fancied doing marines for ages.

So still undecided.

I'll stick the expected lists in the next two posts.

Cheers Scott

Necron List

90+ Overlord
195 - 15 Warriors

170 - 10 Immortals
105 - 3 Wraiths

195 - 15 Warriors
60 - 4 Scarabs

200 - Monolith
50 - Spyder

105 - 3 Wraiths
170 - 10 Immortals

200 - Lychguard or Praetorians
50 - Spyder

Darren's already given me a link with a cool picy.
http://malekith.com/cmon/Necron_Gleiter_01.jpg

But that's not how I intend to paint them.

I'm thinking a gloss white armour effect for the foot troops, probably over painting the transparent green sticks with red.
Vehicles will be matt black, highlighted grey, and Matt dark red, hopefully matching the reds on the troops.
Both done clean and crisp.

Space Marines

145 - Captain, relic blade, storm shield
170 - 10 Tactical

200 - 5 Assault Terminators
50 - Rhino

135 - Iron Clad
35 - drop Pod
100 - 5 Assault

100 - 5 more Assault
170 - 10 tactical

250 - Land Raider

70 - 2 rhinos
115 - Command Squad
70 - landspeeder

Colours would be black and red, accented with white, like the Mortifactors, but swapping the white for red.

Necrons 60+ bases, 1 vehicle
Marines 41 models, 5 vehicles

Necrons would be themed around mass infantry advancing, squares!
Space Marines would be a themed around bolters, flamers and meltas. So up close and personal.

Neither army is built for tournament play, not stupid choices, but trying to think of look and feel and a bit of tactics...

So thoughts...?

Hmm Tricky

On the one hand the biggest factor for me would be that the necrons aren't marines and they have some very new and it has to be said shiny models. I do however have a soft spot for marines and your colour scheme sounds good and there are less models to paint.

You did list more reasons to do the necrons than the marines so I'll vote Necron... I think

I'd nearly made my mind up... But now feel imasculated...

I've just been reading the Necron Codex in detail, many things I thought set in stone have now changed!

Necron Warriors armour were 3+, now 4+.
Gauss Blaters were Assault 2, now Rapid Fire.
We'll be back was 4+, is now Reanimation Protocol 5+.
Ressuection Orb was re-roll We'll be back, is now +1.
Resurrection Orb was and unit with a model in six inches, now characters unit.

My plan no longer seems so good!

On a similar note, i'd have liked to put a unit of scouts in the Marine force, armed with shipper rifles, but they're now WS & BS 3

How things have changed since I last played!!!

Still undecided...

This. It the colour scheme for the marines. It's a slightly altered Mortifactors, solely for ease of painting!

Image

Anyway - the Necrons...

First testers...
Left: metal spray, nul oil.
Middle: white spray, gryphons sepia
Right: metal spray, Argrax Earthshade.

Not keen on the all white.

On the right hand side of the two metal models you can see the areas that I intend to paint white (at least that was the intensional at the time)

Image

This is a single coat of Ceramite white, it did not cover as well as i'd hoped.

Image

Argrax over metal

Image

Nul oil over metal... Prefer this one... The lack of brown is nice I think, but if brown is used on the white, then the Argrax wold win...

Image

Top half is Agrax Earthshade over white.
Bottom half, is straight white.

Image

Arm Celestra grey
Leg and shoulder, white over the grey.

Still patchy, not liking it.

Image

Bottom half: sepia wash
Top half: white layer over the sepia

Quite like the sepia, but really could do with flatter white and non-pooling, the far side not in the photo, has a big blob of brown.

Image

On to the gun.

Khorne red, wazdakka red, squig orange, bloodletter glaze. This is fairly Matt. Hard coat on barrel.

Image

Left: So more bloodletter glaze and hard coat, thought this a little bland.
Right: same colours but with an attempted lightning patern. The gloss varnish is a little OTT in the photo, but quite nice in person.

None of the gun metal is right, next time, very very dark metal.

Image

I'm now really mixed up, just like my paints.

I'm now thinking of using the gloss red on the face and shoulders only, straight silver model, (possibly even doing the red on all the parts I originally wanted white. Almost back to the mortifactors colours on the Necrons.

But I don't want to do the same colour on the guns...

Blue - as I don't fancy green... But may be.

This is really nice

Green works, but we knew that

So can blue, both of these use Object Light Source (OSL). Dare I try?

Or do I stick with the original plan... And just do several coats of white?

Really like the stuff on the second link, especially that converted cryptek. Maybe save the osl or the big stuff and hq so that the effect stands out more?
